We have had many of our customers ask for tips on doing their daughter's hair. We have compiled some great advice from our favorite stylists and tips from moms too.

I find it easiest to style fine hair when it is just slightly damp. So if your daughter’s hair has just been washed, blow dry her hair a bit so it is just slightly damp. (More on blow drying tips to follow), If it is completely dry, use a spray bottle and mist her hair with water. Always use a large toothed comb on wet hair- never a brush! A brush can split the hair when wet and cause the split ends and ‘fly aways’ that are frequently seen with fine hair. The wetter the hair, the more damage you can do to it.

Ask your daughter’s stylist about what products would work best in her type of hair for styling. There are sprays, pomades, cremes, and gels that you can use.

Use the tip of the comb to section the damp hair. This can help the part/lines to be straight and even.

Pull back the hair into sections, depending on the desired style. You can always use a clip to temporarily hold back a section to keep it out of the way while you work on a neighboring section.

Now here is the key! The million dollar concept that has brought bows into many girls' lives, especially those with fine hair. Pull the sectioned hair into a tiny elastic band (they look like the type you would have worn on your braces in middle school). They are available here or in the hair accessory section of some children’s retailers. Put the hair into this band regardless of what type of bow, clip, or barrette you will be using. These little buggers stay in so well, that occasionally they need to be snipped out of the hair. Be careful when removing them so you do not pull out hair with the band.

At this point you can spritz a small bit of hairspray onto her hair to hold the style. If your child has fly-away hair on the sides or small hairs that hang down near her ears, you can use a hair balm to hold the hair behind her ears. Just use a tiny dab, too much will make her hair look greasy or feel too sticky.

Now comes the fun part; adding the bow! See our section on clip types to learn what clip is best for your little one. If the accessory you are adding is on a clip, open the clip and slide it into the hair that is pulled into the rubber band. If the bow is on an elastic band or ‘pony-o’, just put it on over the little elastic band that is already in her hair.

You can even wrap one of the loops of the tiny band over the larger rubber band or clip, for extra hold.

From Anne in WI: The BEST remedy for static hair is Redken #12 Rough Paste.  A tiny bit goes a long way, and sometimes lasts all day.  Smells good too.  You can brush right through it to restyle.
